Kala Namak, or black Himalayan salt, is a grayish-pink colored salt very rich in minerals, and with a strong flavor and aroma which is reminiscent of sulfur. Traditionally used as an ingredient in Indian and Pakistani cuisine to flavor roasted chickpeas or chutneys, is also used in vegan cuisine for scrambled tofu, since its flavor is quite egg-like. Due to its peculiarities, Kala Namak is best used in combination with other herbs and spices as a seasoning blend rather than as a table or a finishing salt.

Description

Black salt or Kala Namak is also sometimes called Himalayan black salt, or Sulemani Namak. This salt comes from the Himalayan mountain range, and has a very high naturally occurring mineral content. Despite its name, this salt has more of a pinkish-gray color, and should not be confused with the actually black-colored Hawaiian black sea salt, which is much milder in flavor. Kala Namak has a strongly sulfurous aroma and is best used as an ingredient in recipes or in combination with other herbs and spices as a seasoning blend rather than as a table salt or a finishing salt. Traditionally used as an ingredient in Indian and Pakistani cuisine to heighten the flavor of roasted chickpeas and other snacks, or for sauces like chutney, is also used in vegan cuisine for scrambled tofu, since its sulfurous flavor is quite reminiscent of  eggs. Naturally vegan and gluten-free.
