Turmeric is a brightly yellow colored spice, very prominent in South Asian cuisine. It is a fundamental ingredient for curries and masala and used in many dry rubs, as well as a natural dye for both foods and fabrics. It is oftentimes used in place of the more expensive saffron to impart a yellow color to rice, bread, and pasta dough. When consumed raw, such as in turmeric lattes or mixed with honey, it is said to have anti-inflammatory properties, beneficial to achy joints especially.
